President Trump signed several immigration-related Executive Orders to, among other things: (1) declare a national emergency at the U.S.-Mexico border that mobilizes the military to assist at the southern border and clarifies its role in protecting the territorial integrity of the U.S., fast-tracks construction of additional barriers along the border, and reinstates the “Remain in Mexico” policy; (2) reinstitute the “immediate removal process” of any migrant who illegally crosses the border; (3) end birthright citizenship on a prospective basis; and (4) pause refugee resettlement programs and expedite removal of migrants who have sought asylum but do not meet the requirements. President Trump also issued other Executive Orders impacting immigrants and the southern border. One directs the U.S. Attorney General to “pursue Federal jurisdiction and seek the death penalty regardless of other factors for every federal capital crime involving the murder of a law-enforcement officer, or a capital crime committed by an alien illegally present in this country,” while another designates foreign drug cartels as terrorist organizations.
