Federal Government Reopens Following Passage of Funding Bill

Last night, the House voted 222-209 to pass and send to the President the funding bill to reopen the federal government, following the Senate’s 60–40 vote on Monday. The President quickly signed the bill following House passage. The package includes the Agriculture-FDA, MilCon-VA, and Legislative Branch appropriations bills, funded through September 30, 2025, along with a continuing resolution (CR) to fund the remainder of the government through January 30. Congress must now pass the remaining appropriations bills or agree to another continuing resolution to prevent another government shutdown on January 30th.

Following passage of the government funding bill, Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) said that the Senate next week will seek to advance a minibus appropriations package comprised of the Senate Labor-HHS-Education Appropriations Bill (S. 2587), the Defense Appropriations Bill (S. 2572), the, the Transportation-HUD Appropriations Bill (S. 2465), and the Commerce-Justice-Science Appropriations Bill (S. 2354). The four-bill package would total more than $1.2 trillion in discretionary spending, dwarfing the $187 billion, three-bill minibus that was part of the deal to reopen the government.
