Trump Administration Agrees to Delay Tariffs on Mexico and Canada for One Month

President Trump agreed to a 30-day pause on his 25% tariff threats against Mexico and Canada after Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau took steps to address his concerns about border security and drug trafficking. The 10% tariffs that Trump ordered on China, however, went into effect. The developments come after Trump last Saturday declared an emergency under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act and authorized tariffs on Mexico, Canada, and China. Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) said that he is taking a “wait and see” approach to Trump’s tariff moves, noting the pause with Mexico and Canada and questioned the extent to which tariffs will ultimately be imposed. Congressional Democrats, including Senate Finance Committee Ranking Member Ron Wyden (D-OR) and House Ways and Means Committee Ranking Member Richard Neal (D-MA) blasted the tariffs as a betrayal of Trump’s promises to reduce inflation and help working families.
