House Republicans Pass Budget Resolution, Must Now Reconcile It With Resolution Passed by the Senate Last Week

Last night, House Republicans approved their budget resolution to enact President Trump’s preferred “one big, beautiful bill” approach to reconciliation by a party-line vote of 217-215. The budget measure calls for $4.5 trillion in tax cuts and a goal of $2 trillion in spending cuts. Every Democrat opposed the resolution along with one Republican—Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY). Since the Senate passed a competing budget resolution last week that calls for a two-bill approach to passing President Trump’s energy, border security/immigration, defense, and tax priorities, Republicans in the two chambers must now reconcile the significant differences between the two fiscal blueprints. The House and Senate must adopt identical budget resolutions to unlock the power of reconciliation. Once lawmakers agree to and pass one budget resolution, relevant Congressional committees will develop the details on how the funds will be spent, which will be cobbled together into a reconciliation bill.
