DOL Publishes Blog Post Detailing Six Steps for an Effective Job Hazard Analysis

The Department of Labor issued a blog post explaining what a job hazard analysis (JHA) is, as well as six steps to conduct a full JHA.

JHAs help identify and control unrecognized hazards, as well as hazards that might emerge when there are changes such as a new process or piece of equipment. The goal of any JHA is to discover: (1) potential consequences and worst-case scenarios; (2) how an accident could happen; (3) contributing factors; (4) the likelihood that an incident could occur; and (5) hazard controls.

The six steps to conducting a job hazard analysis include: (1) selecting and prioritizing the jobs to analyze; (2) analyzing all the steps of the job; (3) looking for hazards; (4) describing the hazards; (5) selecting, installing, maintaining, and reviewing hazard controls; and (6) reviewing the JHA.
