DNC Says Virtual Roll Call to Nominate Biden Will Happen in August

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) has determined that a virtual roll call vote to formally nominate President Biden as the party’s nominee will happen after August 1st, but before the Democratic National Convention on August 19th. The vote was pushed back to August after some congressional Democrats urged the DNC to cancel the vote altogether because they viewed it as a way to curtail debate about whether Biden should continue as the Democratic presidential nominee. The DNC has countered that the virtual roll call vote is necessary to comply with an Ohio law that requires candidates to be certified to appear on the state’s ballots by August 7th. While DNC Chair Jamie Harrison noted that Ohio recently pushed the certification date back to September 1st, the DNC wants to keep the virtual roll call in place due to concerns about possible litigation over moving the certification to September 1, 2024.

The DNC announcement comes as California Senate candidate and current Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) called on President Biden to withdraw from the presidential race, saying, “I have serious concerns about whether the President can defeat Donald Trump in November.”
