Vice President Harris Says She Will Keep Biden’s Restrictions on Asylum and Make It Harder to Lift

During a visit to the U.S.-Mexico border, Vice President Kamala Harris is expected to propose toughening President Biden’s policy that suspends asylum claims in between ports of entry when border crossings reach more than 2,500 a day over a seven-day period. While few details are yet available, Harris’s campaign said the Vice President will not only keep Biden’s policy in place but would make it more difficult to lift the border restrictions. Currently, asylum restrictions can be lifted when the average number of border crossings dips below 1,500 a day over a seven-day period. Harris’s campaign declined to comment on the number of border crossings she plans to propose for asylum restrictions to be lifted.
