Unions Working with State Lawmakers to Place Guardrails on the Use of AI in the Workplace

Since the Senate removed a provision from the One Big Beautiful Bill Act establishing a federal moratorium that would have banned states from regulating artificial intelligence (AI) for the next 10 years, labor unions are accelerating work with state lawmakers across the nation to place state guardrails on the use of AI and algorithms in the workplace.

For example, in Massachusetts, the Teamsters are backing a proposed state law requiring autonomous vehicles to have a human safety operator, effectively forbidding truly driverless rides. Oregon lawmakers also recently passed a bill developed by the Oregon Nurses Association prohibiting AI from using the title “nurse” or any associated abbreviations. And the AFL-CIO has launched a national task force to work with state lawmakers on more laws that regulate automation and AI affecting workers.
