Treasury Secretary Says U.S. Will Reach Debt Limit in August

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent sent a letter to House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) saying that the federal government’s ability to use special accounting maneuvers to stay within the federal debt limit could be exhausted in August. Bessent urged Congress to “increase or suspend the debt limit by mid-July” before the annual August recess “to protect the full faith and credit of the United States.”
