Senate Republicans Say Data Center Industry Must Improve Its Image or Face Further Political Reckoning

The National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) warned that growing voter opposition to data centers in Ohio could fuel broader political resistance to projects nationwide. In a new memo, the NRSC said negative perceptions of data centers have become a potent issue in Sen. Jon Husted’s (R-OH) race against former Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH). Brown has made opposition to the facilities a centerpiece of his campaign. The committee warned that if data centers are blamed for a Republican loss in Ohio, elected officials elsewhere could become reluctant to support new projects. The NRSC urged the industry to improve public perceptions by emphasizing local benefits and ensuring developers, rather than ratepayers, bear infrastructure and utility costs.
