Senate Democrats Block House CR, Raising the Chances of a Government Shutdown at the End of the Month

This afternoon, Senate Democrats blocked consideration of the House-passed continuing resolution funding the government until November 21, 2025 by a vote of 44-48. Sens. Rand Paul (R-KY) and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) were the only Republicans to vote against the CR, while Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) was the only Democrat to vote for it. The Senate also rejected, in a 47-45 vote, an alternative CR introduced by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) that would have extended government funding through October 31, 2025 and extended enhanced premium subsidies for Affordable Care Act health care plans set to expire at the end of the year. The failure of the CR in the Senate significantly raises the chances of a government shutdown when funding expires on September 30th as the House sent its members home until at least October 1, 2025 to pressure the Senate to agree to the House-passed CR.
