In a 5-4 ruling, the U.S. Supreme Court said that the Trump Administration can cancel $783 million in National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding to universities and other recipients for research and the construction of related facilities that were linked to diversity initiatives. The ruling comes after NIH in February terminated grants that do not align with President Trump’s priorities, including those related to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs. The ruling lifts a lower court’s injunction issued in June blocking the cuts in response to a lawsuit filed by health groups and 16 Democratic state attorneys general.
