Yesterday, President Trump signed the Laken Riley Act into law. The bill mandates that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrest individuals in the country illegally who commit theft, burglary, larceny, or shoplifting offenses, crimes that cause serious bodily injury or death, or assault on a law enforcement officer and detain them until they are removed from the United States. The bill would also ensure states have standing to bring civil actions against federal officials who refuse to enforce immigration law or who violate the law.
