NLRB Reports Increase in Union Election Petitions, Unfair Labor Practice Charges in FY 2024

The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) reported that during fiscal year (FY) 2024, the agency received a total of 3,286 union election petitions, representing a 27% increase over FY 2023 and more than double the number of petitions received in FY 2021.  The agency also reported a 7% increase in the filing of unfair labor practice charges–rising from 19,869 in FY 2023 to 21,292 in FY 2024—and the highest total case intake by NLRB field offices in over a decade. On the adjudication side, the Board reported issuing a total of 259 decisions in FY 2024, an increase of 5% over FY 2023. The NLRB noted that the increased workload it experienced in the previous fiscal year comes at a time when staffing in field offices has been reduced by 50% over the past 20 years, and field staff has been reduced by 62% since FY 2011.
