House Passes Senate’s Compromise Budget Resolution to Begin Work on Reconciliation Bill

In a big win for Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) and President Trump, the House passed the Senate’s compromise budget resolution to unlock the reconciliation process through which the GOP plans to move President Trump’s tax, immigration, and defense priorities as well as a debt limit increase. In the end, only two GOP House members voted against the measure—Reps. Thomas Massie (KY) and Victoria Spartz (IN). To stem a revolt of over a dozen members of his caucus Speaker Johnson had to reassure budget hawks that the reconciliation bill would result in the $1.5 trillion in cuts that they are seeking. Johnson also reportedly told holdouts in a private meeting that they could oust him from the speakership if he does not follow through on his fiscal promises.
