In a report to Congress obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission warned lawmakers that it will need to build up more resources to educate employers and conduct investigations regarding the use of artificial intelligence (AI) hiring tools. The report said that a growing dependence on “AI to manage the workplace has the potential to outpace our nation’s capacity to ensure that they are developed in a manner that comports with federal anti-discrimination laws.” The EEOC also explained that the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated interest in AI’s business applications, as companies looked to manage their workforce more efficiently. The report, which proposed enhancing the digital and technological capacity of the EEOC, was sent to the House and Senate Appropriations Committees but did not specifically request more money from Congress.
