The Justice Department released guidance implementing President Trump’s March 1, 2025 executive order designating English as the official language of the U.S. under which the Department will “lead a coordinated effort across federal agencies to minimize non-essential multilingual services, redirect resources toward English-language education and assimilation, and ensure legal compliance with the Executive Order through targeted measures where necessary.” Among other things, the Justice Department will rescind all prior guidance to recipients of federal funding regarding Title VI’s prohibition against national origin discrimination affecting limited English proficient persons.
