The Energy Department (DOE) announced that it has released the Section 179D, “Energy Efficient Commercial Buildings Deduction” Portal, a tool to estimate potential federal tax deductions for installing eligible energy-efficient technologies, including building envelopes, in commercial buildings. The SWACCA-supported Inflation Reduction Act revised the 179D deduction to enable two different pathways for compliance: (1) the traditional pathway based on modeled savings beyond a reference building code; and (2) an alternative pathway for buildings reducing their energy use based on utility data from previous levels. The 179D Portal provides tools for both the traditional compliance pathway and for the alternative compliance pathway for qualifying upgrades beginning in tax year 2023.
