DOE Identifies 16 Federal Sites Across the Country for Data Center and AI Infrastructure Development

The Energy Department (DOE) announced plans to co-locate data centers and install new energy infrastructure for artificial intelligence (AI) on DOE-owned lands. In a new request for information (RFI), DOE identifies 16 potential sites (including at several National Laboratories) for rapid data center construction, including in-place energy infrastructure with the ability to fast-track permitting for new energy generation such as nuclear. DOE notes that responses to the RFI will inform development, encourage private-public partnerships, and enable the construction of AI infrastructure at select DOE sites with a target of commencing operation by the end of 2027. The RFI will be published in the Federal Register and comments will be due within 30 days after publication and can be submitted by email to aiinfrastructure@hq.doe.gov.
