DHS Terminates Temporary Protected Status Designation for Venezuela Effective September 10

The Department of Homeland Security announced the termination of the 2021 designation of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Venezuela, which will end on September 10, 2025 and is expected to effect nearly 250,000 Venezuelans currently in the United States. A U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services spokesperson said that allowing Venezuelans to remain in the U.S. temporarily is “not in America’s best interest” in light of “Venezuela’s substantial role in driving irregular migration and the clear magnet effect” created by TPS, and “directly undermines the Trump Administration’s efforts to secure our southern border and manage migration effectively.
