DHS Begins Enforcing REAL ID Requirements to Enter Federal Facilities and Board Domestic Flights

Yesterday, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) began enforcing REAL ID Act requirements. According to DHS, beginning on May 7, 2025, “every state and territory resident will need to present a REAL ID-compliant license/ID, or another acceptable form of identification, for accessing federal facilities, entering nuclear power plants, and boarding commercial aircraft. The card, itself, must be REAL ID compliant unless the resident is using an alternative acceptable document, such as a passport or passport card, or state-issued Enhanced Driver’s License.”

A list of frequently asked questions regarding REAL ID implementation is available here. During a House Appropriations Subcommittee on Homeland Security hearing on Tuesday, DHS Secretary Noem said travelers without REAL ID compliant cards will still be able to board their flights after the law has taken effect but will face time consuming additional steps before boarding. Data shows that nearly 47% of Americans lack a valid passport as of fiscal year 2024.
