Democratic Senators Introduce Legislation to Enhance Transparency on How App Companies Operate

Senators Brian Schatz (D-HI) and Chris Murphy (D-CT) introduced the Empowering App-Based Workers Act, which would require: (1) disclosure of electronic monitoring and automated decision systems uses, including how they are used to determine pay and other work decisions; (2) the provision of itemized receipts to workers and consumers after every work assignment; (3) that workers receive weekly pay statements with relevant information on their compensation; (4) that rideshare workers receive at least 75 percent of the amount paid by consumers. Additionally, this legislation would prohibit app-based platforms from using interfaces that contain unfair or deceptive information on compensation. Bill text is available here.
