Commerce Department Scrubs CHIPS and Science Act Awards for Words Like “Diversity” and “Climate Change” Amid Speculation That Awards Could Be Frozen or Cancelled

Last Friday, Commerce Department staff overseeing $5 billion in CHIPS and Science Act contracting and $250 million in related workforce training programs funded under the CHIPS and Science Act were reportedly directed to scour the contracts and awards made under the law for over 100 terms, including “Green New Deal,” “climate change,” “diversity,” “equity,” “racism,” “discrimination,” “transgender,” “LGBT,” “abortion,” “pregnant,” “birth control,” “fetus,” “immigrant,” “undocumented,” and “foreign assistance.” There is speculation that contracts and awards that have provisions relating to these topics may be cancelled or frozen.
